I always suggest a person read at least fifty-two books a year for proper mental functioning but if you only have time for one, be at peace: you found it.Ĭhiang’s stories exist somewhere at the intersection between science, theology, sociology and psychology. In one of the collection’s endorsements, Junot Diaz is quoted as saying: Stories of your life and othersĬhiang’s first published story collection boasts impressive diverse and original Sci-Fi stories each story unique by exploring its own themes, traversing different time periods and experimenting with various styles of delivery and storytelling. This is one of the things that makes this story truly remarkable. Of course I had to find out more about the mind behind this incredible story and I was unsurprised to find out it was first released as a short story titled Story of your life in 1988 and later released as the titular story of Ted Chiang’s first short story collection Stories of your life and others.Īfter reading the original story, it occurred to me that perhaps Chiang did not initially set out to explore an alien invasion narrative but rather sought to explore something much deeper and chose this narrative as the medium through which he would explore his intended ideas. I was awestruck by how a seemingly banal aspect of alien invasion stories was utilised in exploring such fascinating ideas. In a slow and minimalist but intentional and enthralling way, Arrival delivered a deeply cerebral plot surrounding the development and use of language as a function of how we perceive the world and the universe at large. Paving the way for mass hysteria, global news channels report the arrival of the unwanted guests, inciting unrest and riots globally.Ī renowned linguist is invited to communicate with the aliens and of course answer the question central to any alien invasion story, ‘ Why are they here?’Īs is customary in most stories of this subgenre, I expected the interactions between the linguist and the aliens to be a blip in a far more expansive plot surrounding human survival in the face of a more technologically advanced species, with each scene visually arresting my imagination with its stunning graphics of an interplanetary war.Ĭontrarily Arrival is in-fact centred around the interactions between the linguist and the aliens trading the typical energetic pacing of alien invasion movies with a somber, somewhat subdued tone and replacing hard-hitting visually stunning battle scenes with commentary on linguistics, physics and what initially appears to be the ominous recounting of key moments in the linguist’s life through flashbacks. To my delight and utter surprise, Arrival spun the popular subgenre on its head, unveiling a deeply immersive original storyline.Īrrival starts fairly conventionally, with the underpinnings of many alien invasion stories the unexpected arrival of alien space ships in different countries around the world, but of course the story unfolds on American soil. I was reluctant to see it, mentally citing my reservations to watching yet another alien invasion movie, a well-trodden trope within the science fiction genre.
